Full Day Fishing: Redfish & More in Lafitte

Get ready for a full day of non-stop action on the waters of Lafitte, Louisiana! Our 7-hour guided fishing trip is perfect for anglers looking to land some of the Gulf Coast's most prized catches. We're talking redfish, black drum, sheepshead, and even the elusive southern flounder. With room for up to 4 guests, this trip is ideal for a small group of friends or family looking to make some unforgettable memories on the water.

What to Expect on the Water

We'll meet bright and early at the docks in Lafitte, where your experienced guide will be waiting with a fully-rigged boat. Don't worry about bringing any gear – we've got you covered with top-notch rods, reels, and tackle. As we cruise through the marshes and bayous, your guide will share local knowledge and point out the best spots to cast your line. Whether you're a seasoned angler or it's your first time holding a rod, we'll make sure you're set up for success.

Fishing Techniques & Hot Spots

In Lafitte, we use a mix of techniques to target different species. For redfish, we might be sight-casting in the shallows or working the edges of oyster beds. When we're after black drum, we'll likely drop baits near structure or use artificial lures. Sheepshead love hanging around pilings and bridges, so we'll show you how to finesse your bait to tempt these crafty biters. And if we're lucky enough to spot some flounder, we'll break out the live bait and show you how to work the bottom for these tasty flatfish.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Redfish: These copper-colored beauties are the crown jewels of Louisiana inshore fishing. Known for their strong fights and distinctive spot near the tail, redfish can range from "rat reds" to bull reds over 40 inches. They're most active in the fall, but we catch them year-round in Lafitte.

Black Drum: Often overlooked, black drum are hard-fighting and great eating when they're in the slot size. These cousins of the redfish can grow to over 100 pounds, though we usually target the smaller ones. They're bottom feeders, so we'll use techniques to get your bait right in their face.

Sheepshead: Don't let their funny looks fool you – sheepshead are some of the wiliest fish in the bayou. With human-like teeth perfect for crushing crustaceans, these striped fish are a blast to catch and even better on the dinner table. They're most active in the cooler months, making them a great winter target.

Southern Flounder: These masters of camouflage are prized for their delicate, sweet meat. Flounder fishing requires patience and a delicate touch, but the reward is worth it. Fall is prime time for flounder as they move to deeper waters, but we can find them year-round if you know where to look.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

Lafitte isn't just another fishing spot – it's a angler's paradise. The mix of brackish water, marsh grass, and oyster beds creates a unique ecosystem that supports a diverse fishery. One minute you might be casting to tailing reds in inches of water, the next you're dropping bait next to an old oil rig for monster drum. The ever-changing nature of the bayou means every trip is different, keeping even the most experienced anglers on their toes.

What's Included (and What's Not)

We provide all the fishing gear you'll need, including quality rods, reels, and tackle. Your guide will also have ice on board to keep your catch fresh. However, this trip doesn't include meals, so make sure to pack some snacks and drinks to keep you fueled up for a full day of fishing. And don't forget to bring a camera – you'll want to document your catches!

Tips for a Great Day

Dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly on the water. Polarized sunglasses are a must for spotting fish, and don't forget the sunscreen – the Louisiana sun can be brutal. If you're prone to seasickness, consider taking medication before the trip. Most importantly, come with a positive attitude and be ready to learn – even if the fish aren't biting, there's always something new to discover on the bayou.

Conservation Matters

In Lafitte, we take conservation seriously. Your guide will help you identify keeper fish and make sure we're following all local regulations. We practice catch-and-release for oversized fish to help maintain healthy populations for future generations. By fishing responsibly, we ensure that the incredible fishery in Lafitte will be around for years to come.

Learn more about the species

Black Drum

Black Drum are the gentle giants of our local waters. These big bruisers can top 90 pounds, though most run 5-30 pounds. You'll find them lurking around oyster beds and mudflats in the bayous and estuaries. They love crunching on crabs and shellfish with those powerful pharyngeal teeth. Spring's the hot time to target them as they school up to spawn. Black Drum put up a stubborn fight, and that firm white meat makes excellent table fare, especially in smaller fish under 15 pounds. To hook into one, try fishing near bottom with fresh crab or shrimp. Listen close and you might even hear their distinctive croaking sound. Here's a local tip: when the water's cool, look for them in shallow mudflats warmed by the sun. Just approach quietly - these guys spook easy despite their size.

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish are the rockstars of our Louisiana flats. These copper-colored beauties with the trademark spot near the tail are a blast to chase in skinny water. You'll find them tailing in water so shallow their backs break the surface, usually 1-4 feet deep. Most run 28-33 inches, but they can grow over 40 inches and 50 pounds. Redfish love to cruise mud bottoms and grass flats, looking for crabs and baitfish. They'll hit just about anything when they're fired up. For a real thrill, try sight-fishing them with topwater lures - nothing beats watching a big red explode on your bait. Fall's prime time as they fatten up for winter. These hard-fighters are prized for both the sport and their mild, flaky meat. Local tip: on calm days, scan for pushes of water or "mud boils" where reds are rooting for food. Ease up quietly and you might get multiple shots at a school.

Redfish

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are the convicts of our local waters, with their distinctive black and white stripes. You'll find these toothy critters hanging around docks, bridges, and any structure covered in barnacles. They typically run 1-8 pounds but can reach up to 20. Sheepshead are notorious bait stealers, using those human-like chompers to nibble crustaceans off pilings. Spring's prime time as they school up to spawn. Anglers love the challenge of hooking these crafty fish, plus they make for some mighty fine eating. To up your odds, use small hooks with fresh bait like fiddler crabs or pieces of shrimp. Fish as close to the structure as you can without snagging. When you feel that telltale tap-tap, set the hook fast - these guys are masters at stripping bait. Patience and a quick hook-set are key to landing these tasty, hard-fighting fish.

Sheepshead

Southern Flounder

Southern Flounder are a prized catch around Lafitte. These flat, oval fish typically run 15-18 inches and hang out on sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow coastal waters. They're masters of camouflage, blending in to ambush prey from below. Spring and fall are prime seasons as flounder move between inshore and offshore areas. Anglers love targeting them for their delicate, white meat and the challenge of hooking these crafty bottom-dwellers. To boost your chances, try drifting or still fishing with live bait like bull minnows or mullet. Work your bait slowly along the bottom, keeping a light touch to detect their subtle bite. When you feel that telltale "thump," set the hook fast - flounder are quick to spit out a bait. With some patience, you might land yourself a tasty 5-pounder for the dinner table.
